Star Weekly Photo Checklist

Each season, from the mid-1950s through the 1965-66 season, The Toronto Star Weekly issued photos (one per issue) of NHL hockey players during the winter months. The first few years were posed shots but, in December 1959, they gave way to color action photos taken by The Star Weekly's ace photographer, Harold Barkley.

Barkley was a pioneer in color, live action hockey photos. He was the first photographer to use electronic flash to take stop-action hockey photos. Using equipment largely of his own design, he would arrive hours before game time to set up his flash units in strategic locations. The equipment was such that this effort would yield him only a few pictures a game but he had a knack for making each shot count.

Collecting these photos can be a confusing because of similarities from year to year and because the photos are often trimmed so there is no date. On this page, therefore, we are providing an illustrated checklist of photos from the various years. We hope collectors will find it useful. We have a few for sale or trade in the Covers/Article Section of our website.

If anyone can help us fill in the blanks it would be appreciated. For example we're certain there must be more team pictures from the 1955-56 and 1956-57 seasons.
